The best games are the ones you can get to the table
Tau Leader Games is is a small game design studio founded by Tony Go. We make specialty games that are printed in limited runs. Based out of Manhattan, New York and fueled by ramen and bubble tea.
Tau Leader Games projects share common traits:
Innovative
Sometimes a gimmick is okay. But it must add to the experience. Board games have been around for centuries but innovative ideas are far from exhausted. With advances in manufacturing and technology, there are endless possibilities. But we should not design with innovation just for the sake of it. Lateral design principles from adjacent disciplines can appear as fresh and new in the board game world.
Purpose
A game should communicate the experience it wants to create, making it serve a purpose. Whether it’s a party game that can be learned in minutes, or a deeper game meant to be played for hours; Good design does not set out to be everything for everyone. Games should concentrate on a primary “action” or emotion to evoke.
Aesthetic
Art enhances a product and does not get in the way. The look and feel of a game should distinguish itself from others. It should be beautiful when viewed in play surrounded by the players, and not just in product photos.
Approachable
At best, a game is self-explanatory through good interaction design. Games should leave room for self expression and teach people how to play. It does not tell players how to play.
Honest
The game is complete in the box and does not require expansions or add-ons for the full experience. A game does not attempt to manipulate a consumer with promises that cannot be kept.
Timeless
Good design avoids trends and hype. Board games are meant to last many years and should be designed in such a way to not appear dated or antiquated. Tried and true methods of manufacturing ensure a game will be played for years on.
